Free Developmental screening checklists!
The Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) has acquired province-wide rights to make the Nipissing District Developmental Screen™ (NDDS™) widely and broadly available throughout communities in Ontario. This tool is now available FREE on the intranet.
The NDDS™ is a developmental checklist for parents to help them understand how their child is growing and developing. From the tool, parents can also learn various activities to stimulate their child’s development. In supporting parents and caregivers with information and activities to enhance their children’s development, and as part of Best Start’s commitment of helping to provide early and ongoing screening of all children to identify potential issues, needs and risks, MCYS will make the NDDS™ more available throughout communities in Ontario.
The NDDS™ is the parent tool recommended for use in the enhanced 18 month well-baby visit. In the discussion of their child’s development with their primary care provider at the 18 month well-baby visit, use of the NDDS™ will provide the parent with a structured framework to discuss their child’s development. The checklist is designed to enhance parent’s knowledge and strengthen their role in the review of their child’s development. Through this process practitioners learn that parent’s are the “experts” on their own child and play a key role in providing knowledge about their child’s development. This kind of preventative care in conjunction with primary care assessment allows for early intervention, treatment, and appropriate referrals to services when needed. In addition, it also allows for opportunities for primary care providers to discuss, assess, and advise about parenting practices and provide parents with information about child health and development, parenting skills, and safety practices.
